FANNING CLASS ANNOUNCEMENT – WANT TO READ THE BIBLE THIS YEAR?
Ok…I’ve been there and done that. You make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, spend more time with your family and read your Bible in a year. You may accomplish your goal on the first three, but end up like the guy above when it comes to reading your Bible! And I’d bet money that you finally give up reading around the middle of Leviticus when it talks about human sacrifice, stoning people and other unmentionable things you can’t do with either people, animals or plants. OK…I get it.
BUT…MAYBE THIS YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is the deal…
1. Below are links to two files - a PDF and Excel file - that contain a bible reading plan for the year. It took me all day to put them together, so you better at least look at them!!!
Chronological Reading Plan - PDF
Chronological Reading Plan - Excel
2. However, this Bible reading plan is different. Based on the new Chronological Study Bible by Thomas Nelson, the books and passages of the Bible are reordered and put them into their historical, chronological order…or into the order in which the events actually happened.
3. I believe that reading the Bible in this way will make it more understandable and readable. You will be able to follow the flow of history and understand how the events mentioned in the Bible are connected to certain people, prophets, psalms, etc. For example, you will understand why David wrote certain Psalms when you read what was happening in his life at the same time. The same thing goes for Paul and the letters that he wrote.
4. As further incentive, I plan to teach my lessons on Sunday from the passages that we read that week. I will try to explain (or ignore) what we have read and comment on what was happening historically and culturally during that time. We can discuss how what we have read applies to our lives today and what is means to us living many centuries removed from Biblical times.
OK…now the disclaimer. You do not have to do this!!! I am not going to ask you if you are reading your Bible this year!!! This is a no pressure deal!!! If you want to do it, then here is the tool to do it. If you don’t want to do it, fine. Have fun in hell. OK…the last part was a joke!!! If you don’t want to participate, you will hear about it on Sunday anyway. But I urge you to go ahead, bite the bullet and decide to read the Bible this year. I’m guessing (and 100% confident) you will be very glad you did!!!
See you Sunday!!!
Mike
